I took this photo on October 4th, 2002, back when I was doing a little photoshoot, trying to create my own custom graphics for a webpage I was making. Specifically, I was making a webpage detailing my experience with video games, and how I had believed that God called me to give them up. I needed some sort of picture to spice up the page that would symbolize how video games had completely consumed my life.
By the way, I did end up acting on that belief - I gave up video games for 3 years straight. Ended up doing me a lot of good; allowed me time to gain my current skills with graphics and web design. I have no regrets about giving them up, but I also have no regrets about coming back to them after that time period. You might say the image still holds true for me, that I am indeed bound to gaming, but I don't see that as entirely a bad thing.
What you see here is one of the best photos out of the 25 that I took that day. Recently I slightly modified it from its original version - improved the color, cropped, and rotated it. Decided I liked the new version so much that I'd post it here and see what others think.
In case you were wondering, the bottom left corner of the image is clipped on purpose. That clipped corner is a result of the rotating; it couldn't be helped. The flat edge was the former bottom of the image before it was rotated. And since I don't know how to digitally draw a realistic arm, I left it clipped.
Another interesting bit of trivia: those aren't actually my hands, they're my little sister's. Her name is Brittany. She was a really big help. My hands are so big, they would have obscured the view of the controler and the chains. But my sister is 8 years younger than me, and thus has much smaller hands. Her hands turned out to be a perfect fit, actually. I would've been hard-pressed to find another person who had both the correct hand size and the patience to sit there waiting while I spent 30 minutes snapping photos from different angles. Actually, the whole process (setting stuff up, positioning the props & hands correctly, taking the pictures, and cleaning up) took well over an hour, probably more than 2 even. Anyway, all that to say: big kudos to Brittany! She apparently was willing to do it for the sole reason that her "hands would get to be online," as if that were some great priviledge. Ah well. (-:
